Memorial Ice Sports Community Welcomes Rink Extension and Looks to the Future

Houston Ice Sports Coalition forms to pursue sustainable ice facilities for current and future generations

HOUSTON — July 15, 2026 — Today, the community welcomed MetroNational’s decision to extend operations at the Memorial City Ice Rink through December 14, providing additional time for Houston’s large ice-skating community, families, and coaches to prepare for the rink’s eventual closure and pursue options for replacing the ice facility.

The community expressed its appreciation to the individuals at MetroNational who supported the extension, as well as to members of Houston City Council, TIRZ 17, the media, and the broader community who advocated on behalf of the rink and its users.

“Children and adults, figure skaters and hockey players, coaches and families will all benefit from this extension.” said Charlotte Nall of Houston Ice Sports Coalition. “It provides important additional time for HISC to evaluate options and work toward re-establishing accessible ice in the area following the rink’s closure.”
The collaboration prompted by the April closure announcement has also led leaders from the hockey and figure skating communities to establish the Houston Ice Sports Coalition, or HISC.

HISC is a Texas nonprofit organization that is working with prospective sponsors and donors, government officials, ice-sports organizations, and community leaders to develop a new model for sustainable and accessible ice facilities in the Houston area.

“The announcement of the rink’s closure brought our community together around a shared determination to look forward,” said Amy Good, president of HISC. “While our immediate concern is ensuring that today’s skaters continue to have access to the ice, we also have an opportunity to create something stable and sustainable that will serve Houston’s skaters for generations to come.”

HISC welcomes inquiries from individuals and organizations that share its vision or are interested in contributing expertise, resources, partnerships or funding. More information is available at houstonisc.org.
